PAPERS FOR venice
Laboratorio della Vigna, Representing Ireland at the 50th Venice Biennale, 2003
laboratorio della vigna
Katie Holten represented Ireland at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 with a new work titled Laboratorio della Vigna. The Laboratorio transformed the Scuola di San Pasquale in the Castello neighborhood of Venice into a public space for reading and contemplation. Having moved to Venice, the artist met with other artists, writers, scientists, and local residents, business owners and students. She produced a series of publications that were made freely available to read and take away at the Scuola during the Biennale. Approximately 13 booklets were printed in the series, with subjects including Water, Weeds, Gardens, and San Pasquale. They were printed locally in an open edition.

Published to accompany Katie Holten's installation at the 2003 Venice Biennale, the open-ended series of booklets collect information gleaned by Holten in the months leading up to and during her stay in Venice. She explains in the introduction to Guide / Guida, the first in the series: "My way has always been to move around and make do, so over the next six-months, and also during my fifty-day residency in Venice, I will publish a series of PAPERS. Each issue will include potentially-informative material gathered from local and wider sources: research, gossip, legitimate and non-legitimate theories, notes, local history."
